We are energetic beings and we run on energy or our chi / prana. This runs through our energy centers our chakras. When translated literally, the Sanskrit word Chakra means “wheel”. This energy flows in our body through a network going to and from the 114 chakras.
In the modern western world, we often talk about the seven primary chakras which are our primary energy centers, closely tied to our physical and mental health. However, in the oral tradition of the chakra system, most spiritual masters will tell you that the chakras are not limited to just seven, nine or even twelve; they extend to as many as 114 chakras in and around the human body. The names and purposes of each of the 114 chakras are subject to interpretation and as such there is no definitive list of all the chakras.
The chakra system is a surprisingly simple yet invaluable tool for aligning your energy, which in turn affects your entire well-being — from the physical, mental, and emotional to the downright spiritual.
Learning how your chakras work, and how you can work with each one, can help you feel more balanced, in harmony and in tune with your intuition, and confident in your actions in body, mind, and spirit.
Working on the lower chakras will prepare you for working with your upper chakras, they are a whole system that work together. For example, when you align the first and second chakras, it helps with overcoming fear. Opening the third chakra helps you to feel your personal power and have the confidence to express yourself. Knowing what’s in your heart comes when you align the fourth chakra. Then, when it comes to verbalizing your needs, desires, and opinions you’re better able to determine how to be truthful to yourself and others. etc.
The 12 Chakra System
The 12 chakra system typically includes the seven primary chakras which are located in the body, plus five transpersonal chakras that are located outside of the body. The five additional chakras combine spiritual and physical aspects of the human experience.
Some energy healers believe that there are in fact 13 chakras within the 12 chakra system. In these interpretations the Earth Chakra is listed as 0 and there is another chakra located between the Soul Star Chakra and Universal Chakra called the Spirit Chakra.

The Nine Chakras in-depth.
0 - Earth Star Chakra
A balanced Earth Star Chakra means we are connected with the ground and thus interconnected to the energy and information of others, we are also connected through our Earth Star chakra to the collective consciousness of all humanity. Sometimes called the “super root,” the Earth Star chakra is the grounding energy center that belongs to the etheric body. It represents our “anchor” for both the physical and the spiritual worlds and continues from your feet between 12 to 18 inches below your feet.
Unbalanced Earth Star Chakra
How to Tell if the Earth Star Chakra is Blocked? Those with blocked or unbalanced earth star chakras may find it difficult to manifest abundance, feel lonely or homesick, feel “not of the earth”, unstable, not grounded, stuck, disoriented, and confused as to their life’s purpose.
1 - Root Chakra
When in balance the root chakra is a powerful steadying force which allows us to set ourselves up for success in other chakras and in other areas of life. All things come back to our sense of balance and self-preservation, so don’t overlook the root chakra! By keeping this first chakra in good shape, we will be better able to feel grounded in our identities, our surroundings, and our different seasons of life, thereby equipping us to be the best possible versions of ourselves.
Unbalanced Root Chakra
An unbalanced root chakra is like our body’s security guard falling asleep on duty. All sorts of chaos can take place. When you feel overwhelmed, spaced out or on the verge of a nervous breakdown, that’s your root chakra screaming that it’s seriously out of alignment. It can cause financial insecurity, poverty mentality, stress, and lack of self-confidence. It can make you feel lethargic, unproductive, stuck and exhausted. When your energy stagnates at the first chakra, you may feel insecure or paranoid. Physiological imbalances at this level tend to show up in the colon, bladder, spinal column, lower back, legs and feet.
2 - Sacral Chakra
The qualities that this chakra unfolds are joy, faith, self-confidence, and balanced energy.
The Sacral Chakra enables us to shape our desires. As the center of passion, it awakens the power of creation. This allows a person to discover the power of choice and create intimate relationships. Motivated by pleasure, Sacral Chakra promotes emotional well-being. It plays an active role in our sexuality and the expression of our emotional needs and desires. It is also is centered on our personal identity and how we respond to the seductive forces of the physical world. A balanced Sacral Chakra has the ability to take risks and experience positivity and compassion.
Unbalanced Sacral Chakra
When the second chakra is unbalanced it causes emotionally disturbed, irritability, lacking creativity, and obsession with sexual thoughts. It can give feelings of lack of control ranging from uncertainty to an inability to cope with life’s changes. It blocks our path to freely express desires and also hinders artistic abilities. It may show up as us being co-dependent on other people, and can create a imbalance causing detachment from oneself.
3 - Solar Plexus Chakra
When I’m balance the solar plexus acts as the center of personal power. This chakra governs personality, ego, and identity, as well as personal freedom, choice, and authenticity.
This chakra also has much to do with motivation, willpower, and purpose, which stem from one’s sense of personal efficacy. Self-confidence and view of the self connect to the solar plexus chakra, as well.
Unbalanced Solar Plexus Chakra
If you have an unbalance in your solar plexus you may show irresponsibility, or have an excessive need for control, victim mentality, and feelings of helplessness. You may show insecurity or inauthenticity within self as that can also be connected to this chakra.
4 - Heart Chakra
The heart chakra is the home of unconditional love. When this chakra is aligned and feeling good, you find that you feel open, loved, and loving, and that unconditional love flows easily through you. You want to have an open, healed, and happy heart chakra so that life is full of love, joy, opportunity and open-heartedness!
Unbalanced Heart Chakra
When the energy in this chakra is not balanced, you can feel scared, fearful, hurt, and perhaps even hateful. Your roads may be blocked. You may find no peace. It's often said that the opposite of love is fear, so an imbalance can manifest as a tight, fearful feeling in your chest. Or, if you've been really hurt, the love you once had can also turn to hatred.
5 - Throat Chakra
A balance in the throat chakra acts as the body’s communication hub. It’s where you will show your authenticity, find your voice, speak your truth, and sing praises—for yourself and others. This chakra is associated with speaking up and expressing yourself, but also with hearing and being heard. It is associated with truth, clarity, and responsibility.
Unbalanced Throat Chakra
When you have an unbalanced throat chakra authentic expression may not be something that comes easily. There’s a delicate dance between saying what you mean and staying tactful or diplomatic. Often it’s easier to say what the other person may want to hear instead of speaking your truth. Fear of not being accepted, or judgment from the other may hinder your truthful verbal expression when you have a blockage here. It can also be overactive when you say hurtful things, speak without thinking or talk too much.
- 3rd Eye Chakra
When the third eye chakra is in balance, you are able to tune into and trust your intuition and imagination. You have a vision, and can see your life with clarity, self-awareness, and emotional balance. You trust your inner knowledge, which allows you make balanced decisions.
Unbalanced 3rd Eye Chakra
A third eye chakra imbalance symptom can physically present itself in blurred vision that leaves us dizzy and teetering. Emotionally it can have us blurred, and we know without clear vision and understanding of our purpose, we feel out of control and often show this in sudden bouts of significant confusion. It leads to a lack of clarity, a feeling of being stuck in the daily grind, an inability to realise your vision, or on the contrary, overactive fantasies, psychic fantasies and illusions. We may feel moody and stubbornly hold on to unhealthy patterns.
7 - Crown Chakra
When the crown chakra opens, we connect with our true spiritual journey. This connection results in peace, contentment, and joy. The seventh chakra helps us to think beyond our physical limitations and explore the boundaries of our mental capabilities.
Unbalanced Crown Chakra
When our crown chakra is unbalanced can show up as depression and anxiety. We can experience lethargy and loneliness, even though we feel an eroding fear of alienation. An imbalance to the crown chakra results in rigid thoughts and an unwillingness to consider another’s perspective or to receive the messages of the divine. We can grow fanatical in what we believe, be unable to accept others without judgment. An imbalance here often leads to behaviors that abuse of power. However, an imbalance can be less obstructive and show as severe indecision, with the inability to have any independent thought or opinion to guide our choices.
8 - Soul Star Chakra
When our soul star is balanced we have clarity on our purpose and why we choose this incarnation. Hence, it can clarify and orient us on our soul purpose. It can help us break through our limiting beliefs. Our authentic self is more easily revealed and can accurately steer us when the soul star is balanced and clear. Thus, we move through a meaningful life with conviction and ease.
Unbalanced Soul Star Chakra
The signs of an unbalanced soul star chakra are similar to those of an overactive crown chakra: we might be ungrounded, feeling disassociated from the earth, confused, spacey, lacking purpose, “blowing in the wind,” excessively daydreaming, unsettled, and directionless. In addition, we may have an obsession with spirituality and enlightenment. Physically, an overactive soul star can result in headaches and dizziness. We may also lack faith, both spiritually and in ourselves.
