Depending on your spiritual or religious background, you may hear them called watchers, familiar spirits, or spiritual spies. In many traditions, they're believed to be spiritual forces that observe your life, gather information, and attempt to interfere with your progress. Whether you believe they're literal spirits, negative spiritual influences, or simply people carrying unhealthy intentions toward you, the lesson is still the same: stop giving everyone access to your life.
The idea of "watchers" isn't unique to modern spiritual teachings. We even find the word used in the Book of Daniel. In Daniel 4:13, Nebuchadnezzar says, "I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven." A few verses later, Daniel 4:17 explains that the matter was "by the decree of the watchers." While the context here refers to heavenly beings carrying out God's judgment rather than what many people today call monitoring spirits, it reminds us that the concept of spiritual beings who observe human affairs has existed for thousands of years. Like many spiritual ideas, different traditions interpret these passages differently, but the theme of spiritual observation appears throughout history.
One of the greatest forms of spiritual protection isn't just the herbs you burn or the prayers you pray. It's discernment. Knowing what to share, who to trust, when to move in silence, and when to protect your energy. Sometimes the greatest protection isn't doing more spiritual work. Sometimes it's simply saying less.
How Monitoring Spirits Work
Many people think of monitoring spirits as only being spiritual entities, but they can work in more than one way.
The first way is through people.
Sometimes the person watching you is simply another human being. They always want to know where you are, what you're doing, who you're talking to, what you're working on, and what your next move is. They ask excessive questions. They seem strangely interested in your personal life. They constantly check in, not because they genuinely care, but because they want information.
The truth is, you don't always know their intentions. They may be rooting for you. They may be jealous of you. They may wish they had what you have. They may secretly hope your plans fail. Or they may simply have an unhealthy obsession with knowing everything that happens in your life.
That, in itself, is a form of monitoring.
Ultimately, however, a monitoring spirit is exactly what its name implies. It is a spirit that watches. It gathers information. It observes movements. It watches for opportunities. It is a spirit of calculated observation.
One of the ways monitoring spirits operate is by using people, and many of those people have absolutely no idea they are being used.
This is why you'll often hear someone say, "I feel like my mother is monitoring me," or "My sister always knows what's going on," or "My friend always asks so many questions."
Sometimes they are simply being used as vessels to gather information. They don't even realize where the curiosity is coming from. They don't understand why they are so fixated on your life, your business, or your movements. They are simply acting on impulses they have never stopped to question.
Not everyone is spiritually aware enough to recognize when they are being influenced.
There are also monitoring spirits that practitioners intentionally work with.
Just as people work with different ancestors, angels, saints, spirits, or elemental forces, there are practitioners who make pacts or agreements with spiritual beings for various purposes, including gathering information, observing others, or carrying out spiritual assignments on their behalf.
This is one reason many traditions emphasize keeping your spiritual house clean.
Mirrors should be spiritually cleansed.
Reflective surfaces should be spiritually maintained.
Objects that serve as gateways or portals within your practice should be regularly cleansed and protected.
Just as you cleanse your altar, your tools, and your home, you should also pay attention to anything that can serve as a point of spiritual access. Maintaining these spaces becomes part of maintaining your overall spiritual hygiene.
Signs a Monitoring Spirit May Be Around
1. Unexplained Obstacles
One of the biggest signs people talk about is unexplained obstacles. Everything seems to be moving forward, then all of a sudden you're hitting one wall after another. Delays start showing up, opportunities disappear, relationships become strained, or things you've been working toward suddenly lose momentum. In many traditions, monitoring spirits aren't believed to be watching just to watch. They're believed to gather information so negative intentions can be directed toward your life. Some people believe this comes through jealousy, envy, or people intentionally trying to stop your progress or even take your place. Whether that's literally true or not, cleansing, uncrossing, protection, and strong boundaries should already be part of your spiritual hygiene.
2. Feeling Watched
Another common sign is the feeling that you're constantly being watched. You may notice it the most when you're making big moves or stepping into a new season of your life. It can feel like someone is always observing what you're doing, even when you're completely alone. Pay attention when that feeling continues to come up alongside other spiritual signs.
3. The "Interview" Person
You know exactly who I'm talking about. They're the person who only seems to call when they want information. They ask question after question about your business, your relationship, your finances, or your goals, but they never really want to spend time with you. They don't genuinely support you, they don't celebrate your wins, and they rarely offer anything in return. Every conversation feels like an interview instead of a relationship. Whether they're consciously doing it or not, I've learned to be careful with people who always want access to my life but never contribute anything positive to it.
4. Strange Emotional Shifts
You may notice that you're excited about a new opportunity, relationship, business idea, or manifestation, and then all of a sudden you feel anxious, heavy, discouraged, or completely drained. The first thing I always recommend is asking yourself whether those feelings actually belong to you. Sometimes they do, and sometimes you're picking up on the energy around you. That's why grounding, centering, calling your energy back, cleansing, and regular uncrossings are so important.

Real quick, Ecclesiastes 10:20, says, "Curse not the king, no not in thy thought... for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter." Whether you read that literally or symbolically, I think there's wisdom. Everything doesn't need to be spoken, and everything doesn't need to be shared. Our ancestors understood long before social media that words travel farther than we think they do. Sometimes protecting your peace begins with protecting your mouth.
2. Weak Spiritual Hygiene
If you only cleanse yourself when something goes wrong, you're already behind. Spiritual hygiene should be just as normal as brushing your teeth or taking a shower. Cleanse before you need to.
3. Ignoring Your Intuition
Have you ever felt like you shouldn't answer the phone? Or suddenly didn't want to tell someone something? Or got a weird feeling in your stomach around a person? Stop overriding those feelings. Your spirit team will often whisper before life has to shout.
4. Allowing Everyone Into Your Space
Everyone doesn't need to come into your home. Everyone doesn't need to know where you live, what you're building, or what you're working on. Access is a privilege, not a requirement.
5. Living Too Publicly
We live in a world where people feel like every meal, every purchase, every relationship, and every accomplishment has to be shared online. Remember, social media is access too. Everybody doesn't need a front row seat to your life.
Monitoring Spirits & the Need for Validation
One thing I've noticed over the years is that monitoring spirits often prey on people who constantly seek confirmation and validation.
If you always need someone to approve your next move, celebrate your plans, agree with your vision, or tell you that you're doing the right thing, you've created an opening. You begin looking outside of yourself before you've even given your own work time to develop.
This is one reason I encourage people to keep certain things private.
When you're solid in what you're building, you don't need to announce every idea. You don't need everyone's opinion. You don't need to convince people that your vision is real. You simply continue the work.
A monitoring spirit looks for those moments when you're seeking validation because those moments often become opportunities to introduce distraction, doubt, confusion, fear, jealousy, gossip, or unnecessary interference.
The more people you invite into your unfinished work, the more opportunities there are for your focus to become divided.
I've also found that many of the people who experience this the most are people who have significant assignments on their lives. They have ideas worth building, gifts worth developing, and a purpose that has the potential to impact others. Because of that, they often attract greater observation.
There is wisdom in allowing your work to mature in silence. Some things are protected simply because they remain hidden until the appointed time.
Spiritual Hygiene Habits That Keep Them Away
1. Cleanse Regularly
Stay consistent with your spiritual baths, uncrossings, smoke cleansing, floor washes, prayers, and whatever practices align with your tradition. I also recommend cleaning your mirrors, televisions, windows, and other reflective surfaces often, as many traditions associate them with spiritual observation or scrying.
2. Ground and Center Yourself
Above everything else, trust your gut. Your gut is your second brain for a reason. But your intuition works best when you're grounded, centered, emotionally balanced, and your own thoughts are clear. That's why I teach grounding and centering before almost anything else. A lot of people doubt themselves when their intuition was right all along.
3. Set Better Boundaries
Not everyone deserves access to your life. Learn to move quietly. Stop feeling like you owe everyone updates on everything you're building.
4. Keep Some Protection Private
Wear your crystals if that's part of your practice. Carry your talismans. Use your oils, sigils, or protective charms. Just don't show everybody everything you're doing. Some of your protection should stay behind the scenes between you, your spirit team, and your ancestors.
5. Stay Connected to Your Spiritual Team
Prayer, meditation, affirmations, grounding, centering, and calling your energy back should become regular habits. Visualize yourself, your family, your home, your business, and everything important to you surrounded in protective white light.
Symbols Commonly Associated With Monitoring Spirits
Different cultures have different names for monitoring spirits, but many traditions share similar symbols that are believed to represent spiritual observation or a need for heightened awareness.
1. Cobwebs Across the Face
Many spiritual workers describe the feeling of walking through a spider web that isn't actually there. If it happens repeatedly, some traditions see it as a sign to slow down, cleanse yourself, and pay attention spiritually.
2. Flies and Gnats
Excessive flies or gnats appearing without an obvious cause are considered by some traditions to be a sign that it's time to strengthen your protection and become more spiritually aware.
3. Spiders
Spiders are often associated with webs, patience, observation, and sensing vibration. Because of their connection to webs and awareness, they're commonly linked to monitoring symbolism in various traditions.
4. Crows and Ravens
Throughout history, crows and ravens have been connected to messages, ancestors, intelligence, warnings, and spiritual observation. Their presence isn't automatically negative, but repeated encounters may encourage you to pay closer attention.
5. Eyes and Mirrors
Eyes are one of the oldest symbols of spiritual observation. Mirrors are used in many traditions for both protection and scrying, which is why many practitioners include them in their spiritual maintenance and protection practices.
Spiritual Cloaking & Concealment
Throughout many spiritual traditions, there is the understanding that not every blessing, every ritual, or every movement should be made visible. Concealment is not always about fear. Sometimes it is about incubation. Seeds germinate beneath the soil. A child develops within the womb. Gold is refined behind the furnace door. There is power in remaining hidden until the work is complete.
Many practitioners work with cloaking rituals to move quietly through the world, reduce unwanted attention, and place themselves beneath a mantle of spiritual covering. Cloaking is not about becoming physically invisible. It is the intentional act of veiling your energy, your plans, your home, or your spiritual work from unnecessary interference.

Cloaking Yourself with Smoke
Smoke has long been used to cleanse, bless, and carry prayers. It can also be used as a symbolic cloak.
As the smoke rises around you, visualize it wrapping itself around your body like a veil. See yourself becoming spiritually hidden from jealousy, harmful intentions, gossip, unnecessary attention, and wandering eyes. Allow the smoke to become your mantle as you pray over yourself before leaving your home or beginning ritual work.
Covering Yourself with Earth & Ashes
Earth and ashes have long been associated with concealment, humility, death, transformation, and protection. In magical practice, covering something with soil symbolically removes it from plain sight. Once something is buried beneath the earth, it becomes hidden, protected, and left to transform away from the eyes of others.
Ashes carry a similar symbolism. Think about the aftermath of a fire. When everything has been reduced to ash, what once stood there is often no longer recognizable. Ashes have the ability to obscure, cover, and disguise what lies beneath them. Because of this, some practitioners use ashes in spiritual work intended to veil themselves, conceal petitions, cloak ritual tools, or symbolize becoming spiritually hidden from unwanted attention.
Some practitioners will lightly dust ritual objects, petitions, or protective workings with sacred ash or bury portions of a working beneath the earth as a symbolic act of placing them under spiritual concealment until the work has reached completion.

The Mirror Box
Another traditional visualization is placing yourself inside a mirrored box.
Imagine yourself standing inside a cube made entirely of mirrors facing outward. Every surface reflects away anything that attempts to enter your space. Jealousy, gossip, spiritual attacks, ill intentions, and harmful projections are unable to reach you because they are reflected back to their point of origin.
This is not a work of revenge. It is simply creating a protected spiritual boundary around yourself.
I understand the direction. This section should stay within your metaphysical framework. Rather than reducing everything to psychology, it should explore the symbolic and magical principles you see reflected in these scriptures. I'd also avoid stating that a verse "means" a specific magical practice. Instead, frame it as a spiritual interpretation or correspondence. That keeps it clear you're sharing your understanding rather than claiming the text explicitly teaches a ritual.
Work in Secret
Psalm 31:20
"You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues."
This verse speaks of sacred concealment. Spiritually, it reminds us that not every work belongs in public view. Some rituals are strengthened when they are performed quietly, away from the opinions, projections, and interference of others.
This can be reflected in your practice by keeping certain workings private, burying portions of a ritual when appropriate, covering your altar, or allowing your intentions to mature in silence before revealing them. There is power in letting a work develop before exposing it to the world.
Cloaking the Home
Isaiah 26:20
"Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until the indignation has passed."
Your doorway is more than an entrance. In many traditions it is considered a spiritual threshold.
This passage can inspire work centered around the home itself. Dressing doorways with protective oils, washing thresholds with spiritual waters, placing protective herbs near entrances, or praying over the doors of your home are all symbolic ways of declaring that your dwelling is a place of peace, privacy, and spiritual refuge.
The Power of Covering
Psalm 27:5
"For in the day of trouble He will conceal me in His shelter; He will hide me in the cover of His tent; He will set me high upon a rock."
This verse contains several powerful symbols.
The tent represents sacred covering and temporary concealment. The rock represents elevation, stability, and perspective. Sometimes protection comes not by confronting every obstacle, but by being lifted above it.
In magical practice, coverings, veils, cloths, canopies, and elevated spaces can all serve as symbolic reminders that your work is being sheltered until the proper time.
The Magic of Discernment
Proverbs 27:12
"A prudent person foresees danger and hides himself, but the simple pass on and suffer for it."
Discernment is one of the greatest forms of spiritual protection.
Not every challenge deserves your attention. Not every invitation deserves your presence. Not every argument deserves your voice.
Sometimes the most powerful act is to recognize what is unfolding and quietly remove yourself before unnecessary conflict ever reaches you.
Asking for Divine Covering
Exodus 33:22
"While My glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by."
This passage paints a beautiful image of being covered by a greater power.
Many practitioners incorporate this symbolism into prayer by asking for a spiritual hand of protection to rest over themselves, their family, their home, or their work. It becomes an act of surrounding yourself with sacred covering before stepping into the world.
Hidden from Secret Plots
Psalm 64:2
"Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the rebellion of the workers of iniquity."
Sometimes we recognize opposition. Other times we do not.
This prayer acknowledges that not every influence is visible and asks for protection from hidden schemes, unseen intentions, and spiritual interference that may be operating beyond our awareness.
Under the Shadow of the Wings
Psalm 17:8
"Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings."
Throughout scripture, wings often symbolize shelter, favor, and sacred covering.
Many practitioners visualize themselves standing beneath great wings of light, feathers, smoke, or shadow during prayer and ritual. Whether viewed literally or symbolically, the image reminds us that concealment is not always about disappearing. Sometimes it is about resting within a field of protection where your spirit can move without unnecessary disturbance.
Magical Correspondences
Many practitioners combine these prayers with symbolic tools that represent concealment and protection, such as cloaking oils, smoke, veils, mirrors, covered altars, threshold work, or herbs traditionally associated with hiding, privacy, and spiritual covering. The tools themselves are not the only source of the work. They become physical symbols that give form to prayer, intention, and focused spiritual action.
The greatest lesson found throughout these passages is that not everything sacred is meant to be seen. Some of the most powerful transformations happen quietly, behind closed doors, beneath the soil, under a veil, and in the secret place where only you and Spirit know the work that is unfolding.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, I always tell people to trust their gut. Your intuition is one of the greatest spiritual gifts you'll ever develop, as long as you're keeping yourself grounded, centered, and spiritually clean. Spirit doesn't usually communicate through fear. It communicates through consistency, patterns, and quiet knowing.
Don't panic over one isolated sign. Look for repetition. Pay attention to your intuition. Keep up with your cleansing. Strengthen your boundaries. Call your power back regularly. There really isn't any harm in over cleansing. I'd rather cleanse and not need it than need it and wish I had done it sooner.
Whether you believe monitoring spirits are literal spiritual entities, negative spiritual influences, or simply the influence of jealous people, your responsibility remains the same. Protect your peace. Protect your energy. Be intentional about who has access to your life, because your energy is one of your greatest spiritual assets. Treat it that way.
