ROOT & FLAME FAMILY
Root & Flame
A Private Hoodoo Circle
Root & Flame is a private, invitation only extension of the Red Room or my private Root & Flame Facebook community.
This is not an open enrollment program, and membership cannot be purchased separately. Invitations are extended personally to Red Room members when the time, relationship, and level of readiness feel aligned. Root & Flame is a circle for deeper study, conversation, practice, and relationship with Hoodoo as a living heritage.
Hoodoo Is Heritage
Hoodoo did not begin as something borrowed, invented, or assembled from the outside.
Hoodoo is an ethnoreligion and was born from African people who carried spiritual knowledge, ritual practices, ways of working with the natural world, the dead, prayer, spirit, and one another across the Atlantic under unimaginable circumstances. In America, those traditions had to adapt. We did not always have access to the same plants, languages, communities, tools, or religious structures we once had. So we worked with what was available. We remembered what we could. We preserved what could be preserved. We made something new without becoming disconnected from what came before.
African parents birthed an American child.
That child is Hoodoo.
The practices changed because the conditions changed, but the spiritual intelligence behind them did not simply disappear. Hoodoo is part of a continuum of African American spiritual and cultural inheritance. It carries the memory of adaptation, survival, relationship, and creation.
There are practices that have been shared and influences that can be discussed openly. But sharing does not erase origin. The foundation of Hoodoo is its own. It belongs to the people and history that created it.
For that reason, Root & Flame approaches Hoodoo as an ethnoreligion, it is our heritage rather than a collection of techniques to consume.
What This Space Holds
Root & Flame is a place to go deeper.
We explore Hoodoo with context, history, discernment, and respect for the people whose lives shaped these traditions. We make room for conversation that cannot always happen in public spaces. We study the roots beneath the work while also honoring the reality that Hoodoo has always been alive, adaptive, and practiced in the everyday lives of Black people.
This is not about performing an identity. It is not about collecting rituals. And it is not about treating a living tradition like an aesthetic or a spiritual buffet.
It is about understanding what we are holding, where it comes from, and how to approach it with integrity.
Entering Root & Flame
Root & Flame is a private, application-based study community. It is not open enrollment, but there are two pathways into the sanctuary.
Through The Red Room
Active Red Room members of African American Heritage may become eligible to apply for Root & Flame after four consecutive months of membership. If your application is approved, Root & Flame is included with your Red Room membership at no additional cost for as long as your qualifying Red Room membership remains active.
Entering Through The Root & Flame Hoodoo Sanctuary Facebook Group
You may also be considered for membership through special invitation from our founder or an authorized Keeper. Invitations are extended to individuals who demonstrate genuine interest, respectful participation, and community involvement within our private Facebook group. This pathway does not require a Red Room membership, but all applicants must complete the application and approval process.
Private Invitations
From time to time, I may personally invite someone to apply outside of the regular application periods. An invitation allows you to apply early; it does not bypass the application process.
Root & Flame is intentionally curated, the application process helps me protect the purpose of the space and make sure the people entering understand what Root & Flame is and what we are here to study.
What is inside Root & Flame is for those who have been invited into the circle.
Some doors are meant to remain closed until they are opened for you.
Root & Flame is one of them.

FAQ's
What happens if my Red Room membership expires? Am I kicked out of Root & Flame?
No. Your Root & Flame access will simply be paused while your Red Room membership is inactive. If you reactivate within 3 months, your Root & Flame access can be restored. If you are gone longer than 3 months, you will need to submit a new application for consideration.
Why do I need Red Room first?
Root & Flame is not a beginner space. Basic spiritual foundations are taught inside Red Room and will not be retaught inside Root & Flame. The Sanctuary is designed to begin where that foundation leaves off.
Do I have to pay extra for Root & Flame?
No. Once approved, Root & Flame is included as long as your qualifying Red Room membership remains active.
Does completing the required time in Red Room guarantee that I'll get into Root & Flame?
No. Completing the membership requirement makes you eligible to apply. Root & Flame is a private, curated space, and all applications are reviewed individually.
Can I join Root & Flame without completing the Red Room requirement?
Only by private invitation from Lisa. Invited members must still complete an application before access is granted.
Can I share Root & Flame lessons or downloads with someone else?
No. Classes, teachings, downloads, login access, and other Root & Flame materials are for approved members only.
Is Root & Flame open to everyone?
No. Root & Flame is specifically rooted in African American Hoodoo and is a private, curated space. Applicants will be asked about their family, cultural, and ancestral connection to the tradition as part of the application process. Lineage is only one part of the review. Your experience, foundational knowledge, readiness for deeper study, time in the Red Room, and the overall application are also considered. Meeting one requirement does not guarantee admission.
Before You Apply
Please do not submit a Root & Flame application until you have completed at least 4 consecutive months as an active Red Room member, unless you have received a private invitation from Lisa. Completing the 4 month requirement makes you eligible to apply but does not guarantee admission. All applications are reviewed individually.
